Properties that are off the gas grid do not have access to mains gas and rely on alternative sources of fuel such as heating oil, electric heating, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), or district heating systems .

There is no definitive source for the number of households not on the gas grid. Estimates for the number and proportion of properties without mains gas are based on the difference between the number of properties and the number of domestic gas meters (including non-consuming meters), as published in the sub-national gas consumption data .
The latest data on heating type for Northern Ireland are for 2016 when only 24% of households used mains gas for heating. 67% used heating oil, by far the highest rate in the UK.
